this piece was a prize at a good buddies wedding social- made sure the guy who won it promised to send me pictures when he hung it.
I want it back.

attended a local anime con last weekend, it was a ton of fun, and local shows are always so much more laid back when transport/lodging isn't a factor
one customer in particular bought some work to customize his kick ass game controller- I made sure he promised to send me pics of the final product.

turned out pretty killer

We'll fly kites tomorrow, promise.

The bots name is "Tonk" and the girl is "Cassie" and they had planned on spending the day flying kites... :(

been wanting to tackle this piece for a long time, it was just one of those pieces that won't get out of your head until you've got it on paper. I have a whole story about the pair I would love to publish someday :)

Almost ready to print!

My very first artbook is 85% done, and the plan is to hit the printing press in 2-3 weeks, just in time for the comic con season!

the book will be 8.5x11, 60pages, it will include: The best of my artwork, my sketches, some previously unseen pieces,  my full process, how I sell/setup at cons, and even some of my high-school doodles

This will be a limited edition, only 300 will ever be printed, and every book is personally numbered and signed by me :) Once I have a finished product, online purchase details will become available, but until then, I just wanted to share a small preview, and let everyone know that its still on its way :)
cheers.

Was commissioned to do this one for a local club owners birthday by a good friend of his. Im usually not up for portrait jobs, but I got to make the rest of him look like an evil villian- so I was game.

Here was my ref shot:

then they had the clubs graphic designer take my work and make this awesome poster for the birthday event - Killer!

Rage and Serenity

Newest piece- magneto from Xmen. I blown away by the First Class movie, and Erik has always been one of the best comic book villains... so this has to be done.

upcoming Evangelion piece.

Side notes: Saw Prometheus last night, and I did really like it, but it also left me a in a headscratching/unsatisfied mood afterward. I wish it didn't present so mush random content and didn't the need to explain any of it.

Another movie Id like to mention "Jennifers body" is hilarious and fairly well done, that movie needed more recognition than it got. I was watching it while working early this morn and thought I would share.

Live Painting 2.0

Did another live painting this past weekend with the very talented: Vibonics, Abstract Artform, and Tiffany Ponce for musical accompaniment

This show was much better than the last, we had 4 artists on projectors this time, and were a lot more involved with what the band was doing.

we are already making plans for another  I've got high hopes this is going somewhere big...

Monday, May 7, 2012

This Last friday, I had an art show, I set up my cintiq and performed a start to finish 2.5h live painting in a downtown bar. it was super fun  and people seemed to genuinely enjoy watching the vector painting show, so success! I even had a band to back me up.

these pics are from the start of the night, it picked up later on. Hope to do it again sometime soon!
cheers.

Back!
Vancouver is GORGEOUS.
This was my first time in the city, and I loved every second of the downtown scene. cant wait to head back

This show was far bigger then anyone was expecting. The first day was so unexpectedly huge- that hundreds of people had to be turned away to avoid overcrowding.

Met up with Arron Douglas (chief from Battlestar) whom once again bought some of my work, and it sounds like he's got Will Wheadom interested in checking out my portfolio this next week at Calgary Expo (que a fangirl squeal)

I've already signed up for next years VanExpo,
I would recommend anyone else within flying distance to do the same

Im off to scramble 101 things tiogether for the calgary trip this weekend...

Prime has just buried his holo-axe into megatrons chest- megatrons wielding his awesome holo-morning star.
those holo-weapons rocked...

This ones a bit rougher than I would have liked (i seem to struggle a bit more with action scenes), but this wont be my last transformer piece, hope you enjoy in any case.
cheers

Odds&Ends&starts.

Life has been busy these days, allow me to tell you about it:
Finally got around to shattering Batman. My life used to revolve around this legend, so I've put off painting anything until I have a solid idea that will hopefully do bats justice. I went for a more iconic/logo-esq solution here, but plan 0n doing something more detailed and less abstract down the line.

Quakers the duck (childrens book I've been chipping away at) is almost ready to hit the printers- couple of weeks left, and I'll have published 2 books in less than a year :)

Did an interview with a local Author last night (just for good practice for the both of us, and to cross promote our work etc) I recommend following his tumblr account, if nothing else for the copious amount of nerdily amazing tees he's been collecting. Once he's got the full article posted I'll do a more detailed post as well.

tried my damndest to get an Artist Alley table at AnimeNorth in Toronto- but tables sold out in minutes (seconds even), and I haven't found anyone willing to share, so that's a no -go for this year. It boggles my mind that I can get tables at San Diago, New York and the Fan Expo etc, (the biggest Cons in North America) without a hint of a problem... but tables at almost any Anime con I've looked into are next to impossible to procure. somethings amiss with that. explain.

Myself and MY NEW BANNERSTAND are off to Vancouver Comic Expo, and Calgary Expo soon... less than a month away. holy crap, just typing that out just made me more frantic and stressed about everything that needs to be done in the next couple weeks.
New pieces I plan to have done for those shows include:

Optimus Prime vs Megatron (70% done)
not showing you everything yet...

Shadow of the Colossus piece (15% done)

Carnage piece (2.9% done)
i've researched stuff... nothing to show yet

Aiko Mascot 2012

The Winnipeg Anime con (Aikon) is notorious for selling out of artist alley tables in minutes, and I've only managed to get in last year by fluke- BUT if you win 1st or 2nd in the mascot contest, you are awarded a table.

plus- the theme this year was Sci Fi... I couldn't resist.

I'm going through Comic Con withdrawal right now... I've been filling out all my Artist alley forms these last couple weeks, getting my tables confirmed for the year, and am JUST itching to attend a show.

Also bought a banner stand :) cannot wait to get the banner printed! (pics will be posted as soon as I have it constructed)

Update 2012

Coldfire is being rebuilt!

Here is a current shot of the piece, as well as the original design- still missing a background and fine tuning, but its coming along.

the background is just a squished jpeg I slapped in for testing- but I think I've got things figured out-should have final image in a couple days (video of the "making of" too... as soon as I can figure out what song to match with it)

original

The coldfire dragon was one of my first really big successful pieces accomplished with the Shattered vector painting style, so I've always been an especially big fan of the piece.

January so far-
Been spending a lot of my spare time on the upcoming "Quackers" children's book, we're trying to have ready for print at the end of the month. I'll post some snippets as soon as it hits printers.

Also had some artwork stolen last week, a European site was selling a piece of mine without permission, and when I emailed them about it, they claimed they had an artist responsible (the f*&^!!). I then showed them several things which proved I had original files, they still refused to take the piece down- so finally in frustration I posted the incident online and informed a couple art communities about the sites art-thievery. from what I hear, the site was soon after attacked with nasty emails+the such.

evil laugh.

The site has since removed my work, but expressed great displeasure concerning their reputation being tainted... easy fix: don't steal artwork. and on top of that, don't claim you didn't steal it when confronted by the artist.

The "Chasing Artwork 01" 60pg Artbook is coming along as well- but mostly in the sense that I'm constantly working on other projects which will eventually end up in the book, I still plan on hitting the printers late Feb/early March to have the 300 copies ready for all the 2012 comic cons I plan on attending. the con scedule is as follows:

Winnipeg Toy+comic Expo (confirmed)
March 3+4

Vancouver Fan Expo (papers filled out)
April 21-22

Calgary Expo (confirmed)
April 27-29

Anime North (I hear its hard to get a table at this one, but will try my best)
May 25-27

Winnipeg Aikon
July --

Chicago Wizard Con
August 9-12

Toronto Fan Expo (papers filled out)
August 23-26

Montreal Comic Con (confirmed)
Sept 17-18

Winnipeg C4
Nov 2-4

Hmm what else...
Resolution: I want to keep this blog updated a big more this year, I find one of my favorite features is just to look back a year or two back and see what I had going on then, and its frustrating when I'm super vague/sparse with my posts :p

Helped out my gf with social posters:
fun lil project, and fun event :)

chat later!
cheers :)

We're Stardust.

without a doubt, In my mind, this is the most beautiful and inspiring
knowledge that science has given us.

Full quote:
"The amazing thing is that every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements - the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution - weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way they could get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today."

Finally, a branding package

this was far overdue.

Its been harder than I thought, trying to brand myself... the big problem is how quickly I'll start to critique and want to change my logo- I find designing logos for high profile mortgage companies or such clients far far easier than coming up with something for myself.
but I think this will work.

Initially, I had wanted a more illustrative logo, but this graphic will (90% of the time) be used in conjunction with my artwork, so something more simple and elegant was called for.

I needed this logo for my upcoming comic con Banner, as well as the cover for my 2012 Artbook

hope you cats approve!

Winnipeg Comic Con

Another Winnipeg comic con has come and gone, and I'm happy to report that I managed to double my print sales compared to last years show :) between that, all the great people I met, and the copious amount of other shenanigans I got up to this weekend, I'm placing this Halloween firmly into the the legendary category :)

Friday:
Set up my table at the con, the volunteers, of course, sent several artists to the wrong tables, so there was a bit of shuffling, but I've come to expect things like that at c4 :)
I had to duck out of the convention early in order to take off to Brandon for my eldest sis's wedding social. My friends and I managed to take home the group costume prize at the end of the night... as the group of sexy nurses.

Saturday:
The very good looking and talented James Gillespie was kind enough to work my table Saturday morning, giving me a chance to recover from the social and make my way back into Winnipeg.
After the frenzy that is Saturday at a con, there was a quick visit at Boston Pizza for a beer and perogi pizza (oh my god delicious) and then it was off to the Six Pines Haunted house, just outside of Winnipeg- it's worth checking out

Sunday:
Sunday at c4 was the very first time I've ever seen the biggest attendance on the last day of a show, thank you Will Shatner:) Sales were steady throughout the day, and as always, the end of the show, there was a rushed race to catch various artists before they packed up for art trades. got some good stuff.

Still mentally and physically exhausted from the show, but already getting excited about the prospect of the next big show, and have made a big long list of new pieces to get ready in time for it :)

Morning Scenery :)

got to spend the morning creating a background scene for a new 2d scrolling game I'm working on :)
